Eggs are a popular food worldwide because of their versatility and nutritional value.
They are rich in high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, riboflavin, selenium and iron. In addition, eggs are easy to prepare and affordable for most people.

They can be prepared in different ways – boiled, baked, fried or as part of various dishes such as omelettes, frittatas, quiches or various pastries. Eggs are a key ingredient in many culinary recipes around the world, adding a richness of flavor and texture to dishes.

Despite their popularity, it is important to note that people with certain health conditions or dietary restrictions may need to limit their intake of eggs due to their cholesterol content. However, for most people, moderate egg consumption can be a tasty and healthy addition to the diet.

Can they be consumed?
But what about expired eggs? Are you allowed to consume them and what are the chances of salmonella?

Benjamin Chapman, a food safety expert, points out the importance of understanding the shelf life of eggs, reports Southern Living.

This term indicates the time during which the eggs are at their best quality, but does not guarantee safety for consumption after the expiry date. Manufacturers usually claim that eggs can last 4-5 weeks in the refrigerator, but there is no universal shelf life to determine safety. Even after the expiration date, you can eat eggs, but there is a risk of salmonella. Contamination can occur inside the egg, although this is rare. Fortunately, salmonella does not appear often, about 1:10,000 or 1:20,000 eggs.

It is important to store eggs properly to reduce the risk of contamination and preserve their freshness. Store them in a refrigerator, ideally below 5°C and always check their quality before use.

If you notice an unusual smell or appearance, it is better not to risk and not consume them. Although rare, it is important to be aware of potential hazards and take precautions to ensure safe food consumption.
