An eerie and disturbing building in New York stands out among the rest, and has caught the attention of many confused passers-by. The skyscraper is 40 stories tall but has no windows, making people wonder what’s going on inside.

And Tom Hanks is terrifying
There are unusual theories about what lies behind its walls. Every few years, photos and videos of the eerie skyscraper appear on social media. In 2017, even Tom Hanks posted on social media:

“This is the scariest building I’ve ever seen! What’s going on inside?”
After videos of the building were shared on Twitter and Reddit this week, netizens had their say on what was inside, with one person writing: “Gives me MI-6 vibes” and another adding: “To the people- lizards don’t need windows.”

The dark secrets of the skyscraper
Conspiracy theorists believe it is a secret NSA (National Security Agency) base. Their investigation uncovered Edward Snowden’s documents, which serve as conclusive evidence that 33 Thomas Street served as an NSA surveillance site.

According to a former AT&T engineer – there is believed to be a link that routes phone calls between the United States and countries around the world. The agency reportedly tapped those calls from a secure facility in the AT&T building, which is one of the most important surveillance sites for the US National Security Agency.

Edward Snowden’s leaked documents claim the structure was used to spy on phone calls, fax messages and internet data and was first developed under the name “Project X”. The NSA declined to comment on the investigation to The Intercept, and what actually goes on behind the building’s doors remains a mystery.

What was the building for?
The truth behind the building doesn’t really fit the crazy theories about aliens and “lizard people”, however, it is interesting and supposedly has some dark secrets.

It is located at 33 Thomas Street in New York, and is also known as the ‘Long Lines’ building. The skyscraper was designed and built between 1969 and 1974 to house the telephone switching equipment of AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph Company) – one of the most important telecommunications centers in the United States. The equipment requires a high level of space and a secure location, so the floors of the building are higher than average. Although its height reaches 40 floors, there are actually only 29 of them.

It is also said that the skyscraper was originally designed to withstand a nuclear blast and had enough food to sustain 1,500 people for two weeks in the event of a disaster.

What is it used for today?
After it was built, it was used as an AT&T telephone exchange until 1999, when the company moved to another location.

Today, the windowless skyscraper is sometimes used for its original purpose by some local operators. Other areas of the building are reportedly used as a high-security data center. It is now better known as 33 Thomas Street, rather than the AT&T Building or the “Long Lines Building”.
