How long can minced meat be stored in the freezer and how long in the refrigerator and most importantly: How do you recognize that it is spoiled?

Ground meat is one of the foods whose price is limited, so many people could keep that very meat in stock. However, one should be careful.

Freshly bought minced meat can stay in the refrigerator for up to two days, on the lowest shelf of the refrigerator, where the temperature is the lowest. Keep it in the package and in an extra bag, to make sure that the blood from the meat does not leak onto the refrigerator and other food.

Cooked mince, in a sauce or in combinations, for example, can be kept in the refrigerator for three to four days, because bacteria can develop even in the refrigerator for a long time. Therefore, if you do not use it within that period, keep it in the freezer.

Raw meat that has been frozen and thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen one to two days after it is removed from the freezer if you do not plan to cook it right away. But it loses moisture in the process and won’t be as tasty when refrozen and thawed. Only raw meat left in the refrigerator or cooked meat that has been sitting for only a few hours can be safely frozen.

Minced meat cannot stay too long in the freezer, because it loses moisture, and thus the quality of the taste is impaired. It can last up to two weeks in the original package, and if you plan to keep it longer than that, it would be a good idea to wrap the package in foil or put it in a freezer bag. It is also good to write the date, so you know exactly when it is valid. Also, the sooner you freeze your beef, the better. If you put it in the freezer as soon as you get home from the store, it will be fresher when you defrost it than if you freeze it later or if you freeze it already cooked.

There are several ways to properly defrost ground meat, but you should never defrost it on the kitchen counter, as this exposes the meat to harmful bacteria. Instead, people should refrigerate frozen beef overnight to thaw gradually (on the bottom shelf to prevent juices from seeping onto other foods). It is safe to refrigerate for two days after removing from the freezer.

Raw or thawed ground beef should never be slimy to the touch. In addition, you should throw away the minced meat if it starts to smell. “Fresh beef has a subtle, clean, slightly ironic smell . ” So if the meat has “pulls” on fish, like ammonia or sulfur, or just generally smells really bad, it’s probably no longer good to eat.

If you need to defrost it faster, you can put it in a plastic ziplock bag and submerge it in cold water for one to three hours or until it is thawed. The water is changed every 30 minutes to keep it cool. You can also defrost it in the microwave. Beef thawed in water or in the microwave should be cooked immediately after thawing.

Color can be an indicator of freshness, but not always. Meat that has been frozen can sometimes change color from red to brown-gray due to lack of oxygen or oxygen entering the freezer, but it can still be good to eat. But if your meat has only browned in the fridge, it’s probably not good anymore, and the smell and slimy touch further confirm that.

Frozen meat is generally good for a while, but the accumulation of ice crystals in the package can mean that the meat has lost moisture. It would still be safe to eat, but maybe not as tasty.
