The Greek police, judging by the words of the Serbs living in Greece, began to charge fines for irresponsible smokers who throw cigarettes out of the car window.

The administrator of the “Live from Greece” Facebook group, Ana Nikolic, warned all Serbs vacationing in Halkidiki, Greece, that the authorities have begun to punish an offense that, unfortunately, is practiced by a large number of Serbs.

Throwing cigarettes from the car window started to be sanctioned, and yesterday during the day she was a witness when the Fire Service issued a fine to a driver. As stated in the announcement, intensified measures have been taken due to the high risk of fire.

Here is her post in full:

“Yesterday in Halkidiki, a person was fined for throwing a cigarette butt from a car. The penalty was written by the Fire Service. In a period when there are severe droughts and high temperatures, throwing a cigarette into nature can easily cause a fire.Firefighters together with inspectors are patrolling in Halkidiki, but also in other destinations due to the extremely high temperatures.

The minimum fine for this offense by the Fire Service is 200 euros, but the fine scales depending on the risk category.

If you commit an offense during a period when there is a high risk of fire like now, the fine would be a minimum of 400 euros, and probably more. The maximum fine is 5,000 euros, in the case of a repeat offense.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection updates the fire danger map by region and district, based on which the amount of the fine is determined.

The most responsible for these checks is the traffic police. According to the Greek laws: “Drivers of all types of vehicles who throw objects or substances from their vehicle that pollute the environment or can cause a fire or accident, such as cigarettes, are punished by revocation of their traffic and driver’s license on the spot for 60 days “.

Otherwise, smoking in a car is allowed by law, with one condition: there must not be a child under 12 years old in the vehicle.

Violation of this regulation leads to very high fines.

“For the specified offense, the passenger who smokes is fined 1,500 euros regardless of whether he is a driver, while the fine is doubled to 3,000 euros if the smoker is driving a company vehicle.

In addition, drivers of these vehicles have their driver’s license revoked for a period of one month for each offense, even if the offense was not committed by them, but by the person driving the car,” wrote Ana Nikolic.
