The adviser to the Ukrainian president, Oleksandr Rodnyansky, told the BBC today that many civilians are leaving Kyiv in fear of a Russian attack tomorrow on Ukraine’s Independence Day.

“There’s certainly a sense of concern in the air,” Rodnjanski said.

That said, people react to the news, try to have contingency plans and don’t want to spend too much time near the center, near the Government building.

“There is a risk that Russia will try to attack right at that time to make up for their inability to achieve any success on the front, to have any success in subduing Ukraine and basically all the failures of the last six months,” Rodnyansky said.

He emphasized that the Government has established anti-aircraft defense and that anti-terrorist operations are underway to combat all planned Russian attacks.

Earlier today, the US Embassy in Kyiv urged American citizens to leave Ukraine, stating that the State Department has information that Russia plans to launch attacks on civilian infrastructure and government facilities in Ukraine in the coming days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Russian forces could intensify attacks on Ukraine today and tomorrow, when Kyiv celebrates Independence Day, warning Moscow of a strong response from Ukrainian forces.

Zelensky warned that Russia could try “something particularly ugly” ahead of Independence Day tomorrow, Reuters reported.
